NT Police Commander charged with assault

A top Territory cop in the police ethics command was allegedly filmed assaulting a woman in a small highway town.

Detective Superintendent Virginia Read is expected to contest allegations she assaulted a woman at Adelaide River on July 17, 2022.

On Monday, her lawyer Raymond Murphy told Chief Judge Elizabeth Morris that Read’s assault charge would ultimately be determined by five and a half minutes of video off a mobile phone.

“Frankly, it’s going to come down to the footage,” Mr Murphy said.

The 55-year-old senior police officer was part of the Professional Standards Command, a division of the NT Police that investigates complaints against officers.

In 2015, Read was awarded a National Police Service Medal to recognise her “past and future commitment to give ethical and diligent service”.

In September 2022, Read was listed as the Neighbourhood Watch NT vice president of the board of management, however the organisation’s website no longer lists her as part of the team.

Read was ordered to attend Darwin Local Court for her next hearing on July 18.
