Authorities are investigating whether “laughing gas” caused an explosion that has left a man fighting for life in hospital.
A woman was also badly burned in the incident at Hurstville, in Sydney’s south, on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to a home in Dora St about 8.46am, arriving to find what Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry described as evidence of a “flash explosion”.
“There was no fire but there was some kind of flash explosion causing significant burns, with one person looking quite critical and the other person suffering some serious injuries,” Supt Dewberry said.
Paramedics treated the man, believed to be in his 30s, before rushing him to Royal North Shore Hospital.
A woman, also in her 30s, was taken to Concord Hospital in a serious condition.
Police are investigating whether the explosion was caused by nitrous oxide cylinders found at the property.
