Wollongong harbour is a popular destination for morning walkers, however for the second time in a week they have sighted a boat sunken at Belmore Basin.

Emergency services were called to the harbour about 7am on Tuesday after reports a boat had capsized.

They discovered a half-cabin cruiser full submerged with diesel spilling into the water.

A specialist hazmat crew placed boons around the vessel to prevent further diesel spewing into the harbour.

Other debris was spotted around the boat including food packaging and a dead fish.

A bystander, who did not wish to be named, said a man was on the boat at the time it began to sink and had to be assisted onto the dock.

The incident comes six days after a yacht sunk less than 50m away.

NSW Police have confirmed they are not investigating the two incidents for any potential criminal matter.

The site has been handed over to Ports NSW.
