Sydney is set to bask in warm and pleasant weather on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach a top of 21C across the city and suburbs — but the sunshine will be short-lived, with rain and strong winds on the way.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a partly cloudy day with a high chance of showers developing from late morning into the afternoon.

Up to 4mm of rain is possible in some areas, with winds shifting from northerly to northwesterly throughout the day at speeds of 15 to 25 km/h.

A strong wind warning is in place for the Sydney Coast and nearby marine areas, as well as a gale warning further south for the Batemans and Eden coasts.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds was issued on Tuesday morning with damaging wind gusts over the alpine peaks, spreading to southern coastal ranges and to the adjacent coastal area by late evening, including Wollongong. Picture: BOM

Looking ahead, cooler temperatures and blustery conditions are forecast for Wednesday, with a top of 17C.

Winds will strengthen in the morning, with gusts reaching 40km/h before easing later in the day.

While the morning will be mostly sunny, there’s a slight chance of showers by the afternoon and evening.

“Winds are expected to pick up across the Sydney coast from Wednesday, with gale warnings issued for offshore waters and a strong wind warning in place for Sydney Enclosed Waters,” the Bureau said.

Further south, the Bureau has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds across parts of the Illawarra, South Coast, and Southern Tablelands, warning of gusts over the alpine peaks and extending to the coastal ranges, including Wollongong, by Tuesday evening.

By Thursday, Sydney is expected to cool further to a maximum of 16C with mostly sunny conditions inland but a slight chance of showers along the coastal fringe. Winds will ease into the evening.

Friday will bring another round of light showers and a top of 17C, particularly along the coast, with cloudy skies and light southerly winds.
