The Sydney Kings and emerging basketballers are set to welcome a $19m double-storey Auburn Basketball Centre after the development was recently approved.
Sydney Central City Planning Panel unanimously gave the green light for the project to replace the existing pergola and concrete slab with a dedicated training and performance indoor recreation facility at Percy St, Lidcombe.
The facility will be built about 40m southwest of the existing Auburn Basketball Centre and will house two basketball training courts, a gym and recovery spaces, players’ lounge, film room for player development and education, retractable spectator seating, sports
administration spaces, meeting rooms, a reception area and kiosk.
The panel’s decision comes after a development application was submitted to Cumberland Council to construct another facility, which sits within Wyatt Park and is home to the Parramatta Basketball Association teams including the Parramatta Wildcats.
The state government will fund the long-awaited project.
About 1000 players and staff use the facility each week and the expansion will also benefit
Hoops Capital Academy and the Sydney Flames WNBL side.
Six submissions objecting to the development were received during the planning phase but the panel approved after a strong demand for new recreational facilities.
It is expected to support elite sport infrastructure including dedicated female programs and facilities to improve pathways for women and girls.
