Sydney is set for a soggy Thursday with heavy showers, powerful winds and hazardous surf expected to lash the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast up to 15mm of rain across parts of the city, with a 90 per cent chance of showers and possible thunderstorms, particularly along the coastal fringe.

Temperatures are expected to reach a frosty top of 20C as chilly southwesterly winds of up to 35km/h blow through.

A hazardous surf warning is in place for the Sydney Coast, with large and powerful waves making conditions dangerous for rock fishing, swimming and boating.

The NSW Police Marine Area Command has advised people to avoid surf-exposed areas and delay any risky water activities.

Sydney and the surrounding coastline are also under a strong wind warning, as are much of the state’s eastern and southern waters.

The soggy conditions are expected to ease on Friday, with showers becoming less likely through the day and a slightly warmer top of 21C forecast.

From Saturday, the Harbour City will enjoy a stretch of dry, warmer days, with temperatures gradually climbing to a peak of 26C by Tuesday, bringing on a final taste of summer-like warmth before more typical autumn weather settles in.

Further inland and across northern parts of the state, flood warnings remain in place for several river systems, including the Hastings, Tuggerah Lake, Paroo and Darling Rivers, with minor to moderate flooding possible.

Surf conditions will remain dangerous across parts of the coast into Friday along the Hunter, Macquarie and Coffs coasts before easing into the weekend.
