Two bushwalkers have been rescued after spending more than 20 hours stranded in blizzard conditions in Kosciuszko National Park.

Emergency services were alerted to the pair - a 31-year-old man and 28-year-old woman - about 7.30am on Saturday.

Rescue teams made an early attempt to reach the duo on the Kosciuszko Walking Trail, about 3km from Mount Kosciuszko, but strong winds and “whiteout conditions” forced them to turn back.

Later, about 10.40pm, police and State Emergency Service alpine officers hiked through the snow to reach the pair, who were not injured, eventually extracting them about 4am on Sunday.

Acting Monaro Police District Inspector Andrew Woods said the incident should serve as a reminder that it was “vital Kosciuszko National Park users are properly prepared before venturing into alpine regions”.

One of the state’s favourite snow spots, the resort is preparing to welcome thousands of people during the winter season.

And while the weekend’s falls were a nice start, there is a lot more snow anticipated in the coming days.

“There’s snow on the forecast up until Tuesday evening, with some models calling for another 20cm, and another weather event predicted for next weekend,” a Thredbo spokeswoman said.

The recent snowfall coincided with Thredbo’s opening weekend, which was packed with activities and entertainment.

“Everyone is thrilled. There is an incredible energy in the village with everyone, from staff to locals and first-timers, really making the most of the snow and everything Thredbo has to offer.”
