Severe heatwave to peak as Sydney’s west expected to soar beyond 40C, with fire bans and health warnings in place
A severe heatwave is tightening its grip on NSW this Friday, with temperatures forecast to climb sharply throughout the day and authorities urging residents to prepare before dangerous conditions peak.
A severe heatwave is expected to intensify across NSW today, with temperatures forecast to climb rapidly through Friday morning before soaring past 40C in parts of Sydney’s west later on Friday afternoon.
The CBD is tipped to reach around 35C, while much of the East Coast is set to swelter as hot, dry air is pushed across the state by a high-pressure system settling over the Tasman.
Authorities warn the most dangerous heat will arrive later today and persist into Saturday, before a cool change moves through late Sunday.
NSW Ambulance Chief Superintendent Steve Bourne said households should take steps early in the day to prepare for the extreme conditions.
“You keep your home cool by closing your doors, windows, curtains and blinds, using cooling devices like fans and air conditioning,” he said.
“Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.”
Total fire bans are in place across multiple regions, including the Lower Central West Plains, Northern Riverina, Southern Riverina and Eastern Riverina, as the worsening heat elevates bushfire risks.
Temperatures are expected to push well past 40C in western NSW and the Sydney basin over the next two days, with emergency services urging people to minimise outdoor activity and check on vulnerable neighbours, relatives and friends.
Authorities say older people, infants, pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions face the highest risk from heat stress.
Residents are encouraged to seek out cool public places, avoid strenuous activity and ensure pets are kept in shaded, well-ventilated areas.
The heatwave is expected to ease late Sunday, with a southerly change forecast to finally bring relief after several days of extreme conditions.
