A man has been jailed for more than a decade after a horrific coward attack in which a woman was hit over the head with a hammer and left to die, before her vulnerable daughter was repeatedly raped.
In the minutes after the man – who cannot legally be named – had finished his shocking attack in Sydney’s west in August 2023, he messaged his own mother.
“I’m sorry mum, I’ve f**ked up. I’m sorry I never got to see you again,” he said.
“I hope one day you can forgive me.”
Now, more than 18 months later, while some elements remain too grim to print, details of the sickening domestic violence attack can be revealed after the man was last week sentenced to 11 years jail in the NSW District Court.
The court heard the man and his partner had separated prior to the attack, however he had lured the woman, and her daughter, back to his home by claiming he had “big news to share”.
Once at the home the two adults then went to have a cigarette, but as they did so he hit the unsuspecting woman in the head with a claw hammer.
As she fell down the man hit her again and again before leaving her, he believed, to die on the garage floor.
He then went inside and found lingerie he had purchased from online retailer Love Honey.
The young girl, who had noticed the man return inside alone, repeatedly asked the man where her mum was.
“Stop asking,” he said, before passing her the lingerie, to which she said: “What the hell is this?”.
The young girl screamed for help as she was locked in a bedroom, a filing cabinet placed across the door.
Over the next eight hours the court heard the man repeatedly sexually attacked the girl.
As the sun rose the next morning the man messaged his mother, and then called his sister telling her he had done “something unforgivable”.
His relatives called the woman’s family in Australia, who alerted NSW Police.
Judge Siobhan Herbert said while the woman had survived, she had been left blind and with a severe traumatic brain injury, meaning she required 24-hour assistance.
“The impact on her life is devastating. The offence was unprovoked and unjustified,” Judge Herbert said.
The court heard the man had written a letter to his partner, apologising for “the mess, the lies, and everything I’ve put you through” … there is not a day go by (that) I do not regret my actions”.
Despite initially being charged with nine offences including attempted murder, the man ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual assault and wounding with intent to murder.
His earliest release date is August 2034, and once back in the community the man will be subject to an extended period of supervision.
An apprehended domestic violence order was also put in place for the protection of his victims for the next 25 years.
