Police investigating a string of suspicious fires throughout Sydney’s eastern suburbs, including a car that was set alight on Tuesday morning, have charged a 20-year old man but maintain there was no sinister motive behind the attacks.

Officers believe the blaze that engulfed a white Mitsubishi SUV in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Edgecliff is related to two separate fires in the area.

A burnt out chair found by police around the corner from the vehicle only 10 minutes after the vehicle fire and a separate blaze in Paddington on September 19 last year are also under investigation.

Following inquiries police arrested a man at Waverley police station who has since been charged with damage property by fire/explosion more than $15,000 and two counts of damage property by fire/explosion less than or equal to $2000.

After fronting Waverly Local Court on Friday he was granted conditional bail to appear before the same court next month.

Despite a wave of anti-Semitic attacks that swept Sydney’s east over several months, Detective Inspector Adam Solah said there wasn’t a clear motive behind any of these new attacks.

“At this stage there is no motive that’s been identified … all those fires appear to be random,” he said.

“The only similarities appear to be that they’re random attacks and that the fires are set to property on the side of the road.”

Police have revealed that petrol was used as an accelerant in the blaze that destroyed the SUV in Edgecliff, with Detective Inspector Solah saying the events are concerning for the community.

“These sorts of fires can quickly escalate to vehicles – as this did – and also to premises,” he said.
