Man shot by police after driving Penrith MP Karen McKeown’s stolen car at them dies

One of two men shot by police in a dramatic confrontation in Wentworthville after a car was stolen last Friday has died in hospital.

One of the two men shot by police after they allegedly stole a car from the home of Penrith MP Karen McKeown before driving it at officers last week has died.

Police had been called to Lane Street in Wentworthville on Friday following reports of a stolen car.

It later emerged the white Mercedes-Benz SUV was owned by Ms McKeown’s husband, who was overseas at the time.

A GPS tracker in the vehicle tracking alerted Ms McKeown to the car’s whereabouts, with police soon arriving at the scene.

Police will allege the stolen vehicle was driven at them as they entered an underground carpark of a unit block, prompting three officers to open fire.

A 26-year-old driver and a 34-year-old passenger were shot.

The officers rendered first aid to the 26-year-old driver and 34-year-old passenger until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics, with the injured men taken to Westmead Hospital.

One of the men was in a critical condition after being shot in the neck while the other who sustained an injury the thigh was in a serious but stable condition.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad with the assistance of South West Metropolitan Region is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
