Lidcombe Rise units completed, primary school for Carter Street Precinct progresses

An apartment complex with social and affordable housing has been completed while fresh images reveal how a primary school for more than 1000 students will transform a Sydney neighbourhood.

The $130m Lidcombe Rise development – where 41 per cent of the 376 apartments will be dedicated to social and affordable housing – has been completed in a central, rapidly growing pocket of Sydney.

Developers Billbergia, the NSW Land and Housing Corporation, Evolve Housing and Plus Architecture delivered the Church St project, which was created to deliver a “mix of critically-needed social, affordable and market housing” near the train station.

The development has 32,411sq m of floor space and a childcare centre for 60 children.

Billbergia Group development manager Thomas Nader said he believed Lidcombe Rise would create a blueprint for what could be achieved across greater Sydney.

“We are thrilled to deliver a socially and economically viable development that provides a critical boost to the supply of social, affordable and market housing in Sydney,’’ he said.

The development is near the Carter Street Precinct, which will shed its industrial past as the former site of the State Abattoirs and warehouses, to host 6200 homes, 12,000sq m of retail space, a community centre, a village centre and three hectares of central open space.

Along with Wentworth Point, Sydney Olympic Park and Melrose Park, the Carter Street Precinct has been at the centre of a push to deliver more infrastructure – such as the second stage for Parramatta light rail – for the surging population.

A 1.88-hectare primary school for 1012 students is being planned for 15A Carter St and will require the Planning Department’s tick of approval.

The school will include 44 general learning spaces, three support learning spaces and a preschool.

Planning documents reveal the next stage requires the preparation of an environment impact statement before it progresses.

Nearby, Wentworth Point High School will open in 2025.
