Former NSW Minister Katrina Hodgkinson is gearing up for a political comeback, eyeing a Labor seat that’s been left vulnerable with the sudden retirement of a minister.
The NSW Nationals MP for Cootamundra is waiting to be endorsed by the party tonight to contest the seat of Whitlam in the southern highlands and south coast.
Ms Hodgkinson previously ran in the federal seat of Gilmore against Warren Mundine in 2019.
The 58-year-old’s preselection will pave the way for a three-cornered contest in the seat under attack after Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones announced his retirement from politics.
The Liberals are running former Clive Palmer candidate Ben Britton while Labor has brought in ex-Green candidate Carol Berry.
Previously a safe Labor seat, the Coalition is optimistic about its chances in Whitlam after growing pushback from the community over plans for an offshore wind farm.
The departure of Mr Jones has also boosted the Coalition’s chances with voters criticising Ms Berry’s preselection and heckling Prime Minister Anthony Albanese when he visited the seat last week.
