DC Studios’ newest feature film Supergirl is set to hit the big screen with Sydney-born actor Milly Alcock playing the titular superhero.

Alcock will star alongside Hollywood A-lister Jason Momoa and Oppenheimer actor David Krumholtz, who plays Supergirl’s dad.

The film opens nationwide on June 25 next year, with Australian filmmaker Craig Gillespie directing the picture.

Described as an “interstellar journey of vengeance and justice”, the latest superhero blockbuster will see Alcock play Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, reluctantly join forces with an unlikely companion against an unexpected, unnamed enemy.

The film promises to give Supergirl an edgier feel compared to Superman’s traditionally squeaky-clean image.

A new trailer for the film shows a hungover Supergirl waking up in a messy apartment as Krypto the Superdog urinates on a photo of Superman featured on the front page of The Daily Planet newspaper.

The trailer also gives us a brief glimpse of Jason Momoa’s infamous character Lobo the bounty hunter.

Born and raised in Sydney’s Inner West, Alcock attended Newtown High School of the Performing Arts before appearing in Australian shows like A Place to Call Home, Upright, and The Gloaming.

Her breakthrough came in HBO’s House of the Dragon, which brought her worldwide recognition as Rhaenyra Targaryen.

The film’s co-producer James Gunn previously said Alcock was his first choice for the Supergirl role, praising her “edge, grace and authenticity” for the grittier, more grounded take on the superhero.

Alcock had a brief post-credits cameo in Gunn’s Superman reboot, which landed in cinemas in July.
