Firefighters have spent hours battling a massive blaze that tore through a chocolate factory in Sydney’s south-west overnight, as investigators work to determine what sparked the fire.
Emergency services were called to the factory on Marple Ave in Villawood just before 7pm yesterday, after a fire broke out in the single-level building.
More than 50 firefighters and 12 fire engines responded to the third-alarm blaze, with crews quickly adopting a defensive strategy after confirming all workers had safely evacuated without injury.
Firefighters battled the flames for over four hours as the fire proved challenging to extinguish, with a large quantity of cardboard boxes inside the building helping to fuel the flames.
An aerial ladder truck was brought in to target the fire from above and help bring it under control.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews were supported at the scene by NSW Police and ambulance paramedics during the four-hour operation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with specialists from the Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) examining the scene.
