Having $800k of your money seized by the Australian Federal Police would put a dent in most people’s house plans – but it hasn’t stopped Sydney identity Fadi Ibrahim from building a multimillion-dollar compound.
The three-storey home is set to feature sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean and will be fitted out with a revolving turntable for his car collection in designs likened to those of Tony Stark’s home in the Iron Man movies.
Fadi avoided jail in June this year after he was arrested, jailed and later pleaded guilty for possessing $600,000 in suspected proceeds of crime after loaning money to his brother Michael in an act described to the courts as “familial generosity”.
Fadi loaned a total of $800,000 to his younger brother in 2017 in an attempt to help establish a financial plan for his life after prison. However, police would later allege Michael used the cash as part of a $1.8m purchase of illegal cigarettes to be smuggled into the country.
The courts heard the Australian Federal Police, in a multi-agency investigation, seized close to $600,000 from Fadi Ibrahim, who was then left a further $200,000 out of pocket as his brother was unable to repay the rest of the loan.
Fadi and his younger brother Michael were arrested alongside more than a dozen associates while in Dubai in August 2017. He was extradited to Australia and refused bail in a Sydney jail for two months, before Michael was found guilty and jailed for 35 years for his role in the drug smuggling operation.
Judge O’Brien sentenced Fadi to a 14-month suspended jail term on the condition he lodge $5000 and be of good behaviour for three years.
Court documents confirmed there was no requirement for Fadi to live at the address his suspended sentence was issued to.
The vision for the three-storey mansion, which has been in the pipeline for several years, will also feature a pool, an outdoor entertainment hub, as well as “expansive ocean views”.
