Caringbah: Teenager survives crash, leaves wreckage at Kareena Private Hospital

A teenager is lucky to be alive according to locals confronted with the horrific aftermath of a high-speed crash into a southern Sydney hospital. See the damage left behind.

A teenager is lucky to be alive after he sped off the road and plummeted into a southern Sydney hospital’s underground carpark, leaving an expensive trail of destruction.

Mangled car parts, spilt fuel, and broken trees littered the crash site less than two days after emergency services freed the 16-year-old boy from the wreckage at Kareena Private Hospital in Caringbah.

Police were called to the hospital just after midnight Sunday following reports a car had left the road and fallen into an underground carpark, colliding with the hospital’s generator.

The young driver was taken to St George Hospital where he remains in a stable but critical condition.

This masthead understands the boy was driving alone at high speeds before he lost control of the vehicle at the nearby intersection.

Despite being roped off to the public on Monday, the aftermath of the crash was unmissable with a storage container caved in and sections of the building exterior missing up to two storeys above the ground.

The hospital generator, worth between roughly $50,000-$200,000, was busted open after taking the brunt force of the crash.

Hospital staff could be seen accessing the storage shed for supplies, metres from where a large gum tree had snapped off and fallen into the rubble.

Caringbah local David Lenertz, 79, said it was a “miracle” the teen survived after going “airborne” straight into the carpark as he assessed the damage following an appointment.

“The motor had come out of the car and the car must have been turning right here (at the corner) doing probably three times the speed limit,” Mr Lenertz said.

“He couldn't make the corner and he’s come straight through the hospital here.

“I just came to have a look at all of this, I can’t believe it, he broke the tree off and all.

Mr Lenertz said there had been “a lot of talk” inside the hospital among staff, patients and visitors who “just can’t believe he survived”.

In response to the extensive damages to the site, a Kareena Private Hospital spokesperson said further repairs would be carried out once an insurance assessment was completed.

“A temporary generator has been successfully tested and installed and will remain operational until a replacement unit arrives in the coming weeks,” the spokesperson said.

“There has been no impact to hospital operations, meaning all surgery and patient care is continuing as normal.

“We have cleared the impacted carpark area to restore vehicle access and further remediation work will occur once an insurance assessment has occurred.

“Our thoughts are with the driver, his family and the first responders who assisted at the scene following the car accident.”

In the wake of the crash, officers attached to Sutherland Shire Police Area Command established a crime scene to be forensically examined by specialist police.
