Two people fined for breaching Covid-19 health directions

As New South Wales reports almost 500 cases of Covid-19 in a single day, five people in the NT have been fined for breaching health directions in separate incidents.

‘Most concerning day’ in NSW as 466 new cases recorded

UPDATED: THREE people have been each slapped with a $5056 fine after being caught travelling from Melbourne to Darwin without an exemption.

Two women aged 24 and 34 and a man, 40, all travelled separately to the NT but didn’t declare they had been in Melbourne, which is a hotspot.

Two of the travellers have already been flown back to Victoria while a third was forced to spend a night in Howard Springs before also being flown back.

Another man has also been fined for failing to get tested after returning from Cairns.

It comes as New South Wales’ Covid-19 wave continues to deteriorate, with a record 466 locally-acquired cases reported on Saturday.

NT Police have revealed they fined a 58-year-old woman at the Alice Springs Quarantine Facility after she left her room.

The woman then removed her mask when confronted by Police.

She had earlier been warned by authorities for alleged breaches.

A 27-year-old man who arrived into Darwin from Cairns has also been fined after failing to get a test.

The man, who spent two weeks in hotel quarantine in Cairns, was required by the NT chief health officer to get a test on day three of being in the Territory.

The measure was implemented to screen for transmission of Covid-19 within quarantine hotels.

NT incident controller Sachin Sharma said it was important for people to comply with the chief health officer Dr Hugh Heggie’s directions.

“The CHO’s recent border direction has prohibited the entry of non-NT residents into the Territory if an individual is arriving from declared hot spot area as an additional layer of protections for all Territorians,” Mr Sharma said.

“It’s a privilege to be able to come home and enjoy the lifestyle the NT provides at the moment.”
