NT News hits the Darwin CBD to see the winter woollies

LOCALS and southerners took the rare opportunity to wear their winter woollies in Darwin — the last place they’d expect to be freezing.

The early morning wind swept through the Darwin CBD where commuters and tourists graced the streets with jumpers and trackies.

Wednesday holds this week’s record for the coolest temperature in Darwin with a 15C minimum and a maximum of 27C.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Sally Cutter confirmed “yep, it’s cold”.

“We’ve had nights this cold this century but it has been a few years since we’ve seen them,” Ms Cutter said.

“It’s been about three or four years since there have been consistent minimums like this.”

The longtime local meteorologist said there was a string of cold daytime temperatures in 2015, similar to what the Territory was currently experiencing.

“We’re going to see a little bit of warming down south early next week but that will be very brief because it looks like we are seeing another cool surge coming through next week,” Ms Cutter said.

“It could be a while before we see those warm days again. We might see 30C days on the weekend but it’s going to be cool.”
