Seabreeze apartments: Sunbuild Nightcliff units build back on

Work is expected to begin later this year on Nightcliff apartments that were stopped when the Territory economy tanked.

The future of bricks is ‘very bright’

NIGHTCLIFF’S landmark Seabreeze apartments are set to rise from the ashes, with a reapplication permit lodged with the Development Consent Authority and a ‘purple sign’ recently posted on the mesh fence around the site.

Respected Darwin business Sunbuild was forced to down tools at the site on the corner of Progress and Dick Ward drives in June 2016 with about a third of the project completed because the company’s bank pulled funding due to the downturn in the Darwin market.

Almost six years later and with the economy growing stronger, Sunbuild owner Neil Sunners has begun the process of completing the five-storey, 92 apartment development.

“The day the funding was pulled was the worst day of my life,” Mr Sunners said.

“I had to let go 52 of my workers and many sub-contractors. It was a very difficult time.”

At the time he hoped the shutdown would be short-term but it has taken until now for confidence in the economy to return.

“I believe the time is right in Darwin to get going again, as the economy is stronger than a few years ago and confidence is continuing to grow”, ” Mr Sunners said.

The apartments will be contained in two blocks with a courtyard atrium, above three levels of underground parking.

There will be an 800sq m commercial hub with covered public parking on the floor behind.

“We’re about a third through the build and when we start it should only take about eight months to complete.”

A Sunbuild crane has been a prominent feature on the Nightcliff skyline on the drive in along Dick Ward Drive for the past six years.

The reapplication is expected to be considered by the Development Consent Authority in March and if approved and subject to finance, work could begin by August.

“This is a quality apartment development in a fantastic part of Darwin that is close to shops, the beach, great sports facilities, Casuarina and the CBD,” Mr Sunners said.
