The date for Darwin’s Deckchair Cinema’s season opening night has been set, with movie-buffs granted a sneak peak of an upcoming Australian blockbuster and an opportunity to rub shoulders with a bona fide Australian star.

Mission Impossible 2 star Richard Roxburgh will be in Darwin for the April 9 launch of the iconic cinema to promote his new movie, The Correspondent.

He will be joined by former reporter now academic Peter Greste, the real life correspondent upon whom the movie is based.

In December 2013 Greste, then working with Qatar-based news agency Al Jazeera, and two of his colleagues were arrested in Cairo by Egyptian authorities and later found guilty of falsifying news and damaging the country’s international reputation.

They were sentenced to seven years in prison, but after negotiations between the Australian and Egyptian Government, Greste eventually regained his freedom in February 2015 and returned to Australia, where he is now a writer and adjunct professor of journalism at Macquarie University.

The Correspondent is described as a gripping biographical thriller about Greste’s campaign defending truth and the triumph of the human spirit. The movie’s official launch is a week later on April 17.

For his part, as well as the Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission Impossible 2, Richard Roxburgh is best-known for his work on television series Rake and Blue Murder and movies including Elvis and Moulin Rouge. He has received several Logie, Helpmann and AACTA awards.

Deckchair Cinema manager James Parker was effusive ahead of the Aussie star’s visit to Darwin.

“Everything has lined up perfectly for the Deckchair Cinema’s opening night this year,” Mr Parker said.

“The thought of inviting Richard to the cinema has been on my mind for many years – I’m a huge fan – and Peter’s story gripped the nation. To have them both at the cinema for The Correspondent will be incredible.”

Tickets for the launch will be available to members from Friday March 14, and non-members from Friday March 21.
