Swimming hole closed: Could this be the return of The Loch Alexander Monster

Latest, September 13: Darwin’s popular Lake Alexander swimming hole has reopened to the public after a reported shark sighting on Tuesday.

On Friday, the City of Darwin confirmed the lake was once again safe for swimming and other recreational activities following the closure earlier in the week.

“NT Fisheries conducted a survey of Lake Alexander and have advised that they did not detect a shark,” a council spokeswoman said.

Possible shark sighting closes Lake Alexander

September 10: The Darwin council has closed popular swimming hole Lake Alexander after a member of the public reported a suspected shark sighting.

The council chose to close the lake effective immediately after hearing the “unconfirmed report” of the shark sighting.

“Our teams are working hard to verify the report and ensure public safety,” City of Darwin said.

“In the meantime, the lake remains closed, and signage has been placed around the area to advise of the closure.

“Please avoid all water activities until further notice.

“We will work closely with NT Fisheries to investigate the matter and keep you updated as soon as it’s safe to reopen.”

The East Point location is no stranger to mystery beasts lurking in its depths, with the often-named Loch Alexander Monster originally surfacing in August 2009.

On that occasion, an unidentified fish bit a woman who was bathing in the lake, while in 2022 and again in 2023 other fish were falsely identified as sharks.

On those occasion NT Fisheries dredgings did not find a shark, but instead other fish such as milkfish, mullet and barramundi.
