Palmerston domestic violence centre receives $13.4m

A purpose-built crisis accommodation facility will be built in Palmerston for those seeking refuge from domestic violence.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

THOSE seeking refuge from violent and abusive homes will soon find safety at a multimillion crisis centre in Palmerston.

The Salvation Army and the Australian Government are jointly spending $5.9 million to construct a purpose built crisis accommodation facility, with construction to be completed in 2023.

The NT Government has committed to spend a further $7.5 million over five years to provide critical support to women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Salvation Army General Manager Family Violence Lorinda Hamilton said the funding would ensure 24-hour support to up to 49 women and children fleeing domestic violence at any one time.

The facility will offer both semi-independent crisis and longer term transitional accommodation.

The centre will also provide women trauma recovery services and access to training, parenting and employment opportunities, as well as a learning and supportive environment for their children.

Salvation Army Northern Territory Family Violence State Manager Dianne Gipey said the centre would provide a contemporary, trauma-informed service that was culturally responsive and disability inclusive.

Territory Families and Urban Housing Minister Kate Worden said the centre would allow women to regain control of their lives and rebuild.

“Fleeing a violent situation take a lot of strength and courage,” Ms Worden said.

“We want to make sure we have services in place which gives a sense of warmth and protection.”

The funding is part of the Territory’s 10-year commitment and strategy to reduce domestic, family and sexual violence.
