NIGHTCLIFF’S long-awaited 24-hour police station is set to open Saturday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and speeches.

But a sneak peek today for NT News readers – the first published pictures of the station’s interiors.

Originally expected to be completed in January, the $10.5m station is part of the Government’s $45m John Stokes Square redevelopment.

The plan to build a police station in Nightcliff was first proposed by then CLP opposition leader Terry Mills during the 2012 Territory election campaign but never built.

Local member Natasha Fyles and the incoming Labor Government picked up the promise at the 2016 Territory election campaign.

“We promised to deliver a 24-hour Police Station to service the inner-northern suburbs and we are,” Minister Fyles said earlier this year.

“This revitalising project is creating approximately 250 important jobs across both the police station and social housing redevelopment.”

Public Housing residents at Stokes Hill Square were relocated when demolition of the old public housing estate. Construction work at the site started in early 2020.

The station dominates the Progress Drive strip and rams home its presence with To Serve & Protect, the police motto, written large on its in-bound side. The structure is arguably the largest public building in Nightcliff.

Earlier this year, Police Minister Nicole Manison told media the Government’s spending on new police station was the largest ever.

“We are ensuring our police have the best resources possible to undertake the tough work they do, that includes better police stations in our towns and our communities,” she said.

“We have already delivered new stations in Palmerston and Angurugu, Nightcliff is on track for completion in 2021, and new stations in Ngukurr and Maningrida will be getting underway soon. No government has delivered more for our police.”

In addition to the new police station, the old John Stokes Square is being transformed into a community precinct that will better connect Nightcliff village with nearby Nightcliff Shopping Centre via a pedestrian friendly link.

Almost 80 new social housing units specifically designed for seniors and people living with disabilities are under construction and expected to be completed next year.

Opposition Infrastructure Minister Gerard Maley has previously attacked the Government for delays in delivering Nightcliff police station and other infrastructure projects on time.

Government says delays were caused by ‘latent conditions’ including asbestos, old pipes and cables.
