Darwin could be getting a new seven storey office building and data centre – which features a “mission critical operations space” – if the company’s planning application is approved.

Data centre moguls NextDC have submitted the planning application to build the new building next to their existing data centre on the outskirts of the Darwin CBD.

According to the statement of effect, developed by town planners Cunnington Rose on the company’s behalf, the seven storey building will comprise of office space and data halls.

Set to be located on Ryko Court on the block which fronts Harvey St and Garramilla Blvd, the building design will “activate” the area and “provide significant improvements to the public realm interface,” according to the statement.

The inside will contain a “mission critical workspace” and office space for NextDC staff while also functioning as a regional data centre, the statement of effect said.

The statement of effect said data will be stored in three 1,091 sqm data halls which will be in levels one to three.

Plant and necessary infrastructure – such as cooling equipment and backup generators – will be spread across the other levels, according to the statement of effect.

“A total of 12 carparking spaces, six motorcycle parking spaces and 27 bicycle parking spaces are provided in the lower ground level, with a single loading / unloading area providing access to the loading dock and equipment lifts,” the statement said.

The development application comes as the company was named the successful proponent for building a data centre in the Top End capital through the Territory government’s “Digital Territory” initiative.

Next DC spent $80 million on their first data centre in Darwin, D1, which opened in August 2024.

Members of the public are invited to give their feedback on the proposal until midnight, March 7.
