The moments leading up to a woman, who was lying in the middle of a road, was struck by a car on a Top End road.

How to drive safely on Territory roads

THE moments leading up to a woman being struck by a car in the middle of a Palmerston road was caught on CCTV.

The woman suffered non-life threatening injuries when the vehicle struck her about 9.30pm Wednesday.

Northern Watch Commander Neil Mellon said the woman was laying on the road beside the Rolyat St and Maluka Dr roundabout in Palmerston when she was hit, about 9.30pm.

“CCTV footage showed the female shuffling onto the road some 10 minutes before she was struck, several vehicles had to take evasive action to avoid a collision with the as she sat in the middle of the road for some time,” Commander Mellon said.

“His attention was drawn to some other people, potentially friends or associates of this lady that was on the road and so the driver’s vision was drawn across to these people when he continued around the roundabout and then unfortunately, due to no fault of his own, struck the pedestrian.”

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the woman was unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene.

“She had a number of injuries but not too serious so she was taken off to the Royal Darwin Hospital,” Mr Garraway said.

Commander Mellon said the 45-year-old man driving the vehicle stayed at the scene until emergency service crews arrived.

“The driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a reading of 0.00 and was visibly distressed about the incident. No charges are expected to be laid,” he said.

Peak hour jam

A TWO car crash caused “mayhem” in the Top End during peak hour traffic on Tuesday afternoon.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the two people involved in the Yarrawonga crash received only minor injuries from the incident.

“(The crash occurred) outside of Gateway Shopping Centre where two cars have collided there which obviously caused quite a lot of traffic to back up in the middle of peak hour,” Mr Garraway said.

“Emergency services cleaned it up as quickly as they could to try and get that traffic flowing again.”

Additionally, a person from a two car crash on Trower Rd in Tiwi was transported to hospital about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

“Only one person required our assistance and was transported to hospital,” Mr Garraway said.

“But as you could imagine, it is a bit chaotic around the 4.30pm which it normally is, peak hour traffic seems to create mayhem on most days.”

Police search

POLICE are still on the hunt for a person they believe threw a heavy object at a passing vehicle causing significant injuries.

A black Mazda CX7 was travelling inbound along McMillans Rd near Malak Cres when an object was hurled at the vehicle about 1.30am Saturday.

The object struck a 25-year-old man and caused significant injuries.

The man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, needed treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Serious Crime detectives are investigating and are calling for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier said the actions were a serious criminal offence which could carry long term penalties.

“The dangerous actions of the persons responsible for this incident could cause lifelong issues for the victim,” Sergeant Cottier said.

“These actions constitute serious criminal offences which could carry life imprisonment.”

NT Police are calling for information after a woman was allegedly assaulted after boarding a bus in Parap on Monday.

The woman boarded the bus on the Stuart Highway about 10.40am.

A man, who was unknown to the woman, allegedly assaulted her with an edged weapon upon boarding.

She received minor injuries and the offender fled the scene before police arrived on the scene.

Glass smashed and ciggies stolen from Central Australia supermarket

CIGARETTES were stolen from a busy Central Australian supermarket in the early hours of Tuesday.

Southern Watch Commander Rob Engels said how many people were involved in the Bath St and Gregory Tce Coles Alice Springs robbery and how many cigarettes were stolen was unknown, until police obtained CCTV.

“They smashed a glass pane on the front door, gained entry and a quantity of cigarettes was stolen,” Commander Engels said.

“That will be followed by Strike Force Viper today.”

The incident occurred at 2.15am on Tuesday and remains under police investigation.

Fortunate to be alive

A PILOT has had a lucky escape after landing a small plane in precarious conditions at the weekend.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the landing gear in the Cessna plane “would not come down or wouldn’t engage” while trying to land at the Darwin Airport.

“He flew around for a while but obviously got to the point where he had to land sooner or later because he was going to run out of fuel,” Mr Garraway said.

“He made the decision to land and fortunately there were no issues with that landing and he was fine and there was no need for us to stay around and help.”

Also at the weekend, three people were involved in a buggy crash at Gunn Point and treated by paramedics on Saturday, about 5pm.

“We responded out there and brought three people back to the hospital, none of them with too many serious injuries but did require a hospitalisation,” Mr Garraway said.

And on Saturday morning, a man crashed his motorbike, leaving him covered in grazes on the Arnhem Hwy near the Bark Hut Inn.

“We did transport the male back to the Royal Darwin Hospital just from grazing as a result of coming off that motorbike,” he said.

Mr Garraway reminded riders to “make the best of the dry season weather” while being safe on Territory roads.
