The Northern Territory Housing Industry Association says planning reform to speed up development proposals and better data-driven policy to ensure housing supply meets demand, are on the industry’s federal budget wishlist.
NT CEO Luis Espinoza said the HIA’s position for the next Federal Election is quite simple and the flow on effects should be felt in the NT.
He said the Housing Industry Association (HIA) is demanding that housing be made a national priority and it is asking that all political parties be outraged over the status quo and be bold, be courageous and prioritise initiatives which directly improve housing supply.
“For housing supply to meet the needs of our communities in Northern Territory, we must tackle the issues preventing faster development,” Mr Espinoza said.
“Planning reforms and infrastructure upgrades are key to unlocking land supply and ensuring it’s shovel-ready when we need it.
“We need real reform in Northern Territory, not more commentary or niche policy solutions.
Builders are ready to build. The system needs to let them. Let’s build
”When you look at the costs of building a new home around the country it is quite sad to see that most of that was dedicated to taxes and fees for regulatory processes.
“Governments should be looking at these closely, if affordability for young people to get into the housing market is to become a reality.
“The NT is no different to other states except for the lack of growth in the Top End.
“No matter who winds government, the issues must be addressed in a joint effort. We need to leave politics aside.”
