THE Country Liberal Party has announced Kris Civitarese will contest the seat of Daly following a spirited preselection.

The process took the party’s rank-and-file members hours on Sunday to elect the ex-army telecommunication technician, but CLP president Jamie DeBrenni praised the rigorous debate.

“It shows how good our democratic process, interest and quality of the candidates for it to take so long for a result. So it’s really great,” he said.

Mr Civitarese, who is an alderman on the Barkly Regional Council and grew up in Tennant Creek, runs his family’s construction business.

The preselection comes after CLP Daly MLA Ian Sloan only resigned on Thursday over concerns for his health and in the best interests of his family.

Mr Sloan had only been elected 12 months earlier at the 2020 election.

Candidates that intend to contest Daly have to nominate by Thursday. The by-election runs on September 11.
