Data shows improved court case finalisations cutting through backlog

New court data indicates the NT Government’s TI-GER Taskforce has improved case finalisations and is cutting through the backlog the government said was left by the former Labor Government.
Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby said the latest NT Local Court data shows the TI-GER Taskforce has played a central role in finalising 24,801 cases in the year to October 2025, “ensuring offenders are dealt with faster, victims receive certainty sooner, and communities are better protected”.
Key statistic highlights:
•24,801 cases finalised in year to October 2025
•10 per cent fewer prisoners on remand since spike after first tranche of criminal justice reforms
•58 per cent of all adult prisoners are facing custodial sentences, not being held in remand
•1635 fewer victims of crime in year to October 2025
She said the figures demonstrates that the TI-GER Taskforce is delivering exactly what it was established to do; fast-track cases, restore confidence to the court system and ensure real consequences for offenders.
“The TI-GER Taskforce has teeth, and these results prove it,” Ms Boothby said.
“After nearly a decade of Labor’s neglect and chronic under-resourcing of the justice system, the CLP Government created the TI-GER Taskforce to fix the mess, and it is working.”
Ms Boothby said despite historically high lodgement and remand rates following the Government’s stronger bail laws, the court system is now resolving more matters, faster, than ever before.
She said the Taskforce’s focus on case progression has helped stabilise remand numbers, with a 10 per cent reduction since May and at the same time, more offenders are being sentenced rather than cycling through remand, with 58 per cent of adult prisoners now serving custodial sentences, delivering real consequences, and improving community safety.
“The TI-GER Taskforce is ensuring offenders are held to account, not left waiting in the system,” Minister Boothby said.
“When cases move quickly, victims are not left in limbo, police are freed up to focus on frontline duties, and Territorians are safer.”
The Taskforce’s success follows strong crime statistics released last month, showing more than 1,600 less victims of crime compared to the same time last year, a clear sign the CLP Government’s Reducing Crime Strategy is working.
