Mood 'changing slightly' around Australia Day

THE Territory’s multicultural spirit will shine under the spotlight of a massive Australia Day festival, featuring Electric Fields and Darwin artists King Stingray.

Darwin’s biggest ever Australia Day festival will be held at the Darwin Waterfront and the Darwin Convention Centre on Wednesday January 26.

Australia Day Council NT chair Nigel Browne said the all-day free event would mesmerise, excite and delights while celebrating Australia’s rich cultural diversity.

“(It’s) about encouraging all communities across the Northern Territory to embrace the national narrative of ‘Reflect, Respect, Celebrate – we are all a part of the story’,” Mr Browne said.

Mr Browne said the festival would depicting the Territory’s vibrant multicultural community, with dazzling dance performances, a stellar music concert, visual arts exhibitions, entertainment, kids activities, storytelling, food stalls and mesmerising projections.

The festival will kick off at the Darwin Waterfront with a warm up Zumba class followed by the annual 7am OzRun.

More than 4000 people joined the fun run last year, starting the day with a 2.5km or 5km challenge.

A Smoking Ceremony will be held at 8.30am and from there the action amps up at the convention centre.

Mr Browne said the musical and performance line up would feature this country’s finest First Nations and local-homegrown talent.

The ARIA Award winning act Electric Fields will headline the festival, joined by Australia’s fastest rising emerging artists King Stingray.

The Darwin group was recently crowned Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year after making waves in the surf-rock scene mixing ancient Yolŋu manikay and biḻma clapsticks with hot electric guitars and searing lyrics.

The afternoon will be presented by Charlie King and will feature local legends Dave Garnham and the Reasons to Live, The Youth Mill and local talents Edwin Fejo, Jordan Ravi, Alviston Wunungmurra and Emma Rowe accompanied by a 10 piece orchestra.

A festival finale will include a giant projection installation to transform Parliament House and The Hilton in Darwin’s city heart.
