Construction under way on Palmerston’s ‘largest infrastructure project’ ever

Construction crews are diving into work on Palmerston’s most exciting redevelopment in the city’s history. The $19.4m family-focused project will deliver fun for kids, teens and adults.

Shovels have hit the soil on the “most significant and largest” development in Palmerston’s history.

It’s full steam ahead for the satellite city’s $19.4m Swimming, Wellness, Events, Leisure, Lifestyle (SWELL) centre, with work commencing just two days after the existing pool’s closure.

Territory company Jaytex Constructions was awarded the tender for the $19.4m project, saying will create more than 100 local jobs.

A 50m pool is the jewel in the project’s crown and there will also be a dedicated warm water pool, a toddlers’ play pool and a half basketball court.

Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell said a “Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course unlike anything in the Top End” could also be the biggest drawcard.

“The two-level obstacle course is probably the most exciting component,” she said.

“It’s a bit like a Ninja Warrior course with cannons on the ground level for people to try to shoot others on the higher floor.

“It’s a harnessed obstacle course that can be run wet or dry.”

Ms Pascoe-Bell said SWELL was the largest project the city had undertaken in one hit.

“The pool was over 30 years old and hadn’t had any upgrades at all in that time,” she said.

“There’ll be a second pool installed - it will be heated for physiotherapy and aqua aerobics, as well as swimming lessons.

“A lot more entertainment for youth is also included with the zero depth and little kids’ play area and there are activities for older teenagers too.

“There’ll also be a half basketball court and events area, cafe and other facilities that will really make it a family-friendly venue.”

The facility’s gym and youth centre will remain open throughout construction.

The project is on schedule and set to be completed by November 2023.

Like the existing facility, SWELL will remain free for the public to visit.

The City of Palmerston has allocated $6.9m to the project, while federal funding makes up $5m and the Northern Territory government is chipping in $7.5m.
