CHIEF Michael Gunner has valiantly come to the defence of the Territory after US politician Ted Cruz took a swipe at the NT’s vaccine policy.

Last week Mr Cruz shared a video of Mr Gunner’s Covid-19 mandatory vaccine announcement on social media, with dismay saying: “The Covid tyranny of their (Australia’s) current government is sad and disgraceful.”

“I love the Aussies. Their history of rugged independence is legendary,” he said.

“I’ve always said Australia is the Texas of the Pacific.

“Individual liberty matters.”

A week later in response, Mr Gunner schooled Mr Cruz with facts about the NT’s response to Covid-19.

“Nearly 70,000 Texans have tragically died from Covid,” Mr Gunner said.

“There have been zero deaths in the Territory. Did you know that? Vaccination is so important here because we have vulnerable communities and the oldest continuous living culture on the planet to protect. Did you know that?

“We have been in lock down for just eight days in 18 months. Our businesses and schools are all open. Did you know that?

“We don’t need your lectures, thanks mate. You know nothing about us. And if you stand against a lifesaving vaccine, then you sure as hell don’t stand with Australia.

“I love Texas (go Longhorns), but when it comes to Covid, I’m glad we are nothing like you.”

The controversial Mr Cruz, who is fully vaccinated, has been an outspoken opponent of vaccine mandates in the United States.
