One of the Territory’s top academics and a leading political watcher has been recognised for his knowledge and career at a Charles Darwin University graduation ceremony on Thursday.

Almost 300 students crossed the stage in cap and gown at the graduation ceremony in Alice Springs.

Thursday’s ceremony celebrated the achievements of 48 higher education students and 243 VET students.

There were 58 First Nations students and one PhD recipient.

While most were in the early stages of academic advancement, Professor Rolf Gerritsen is well into a storeyed career and was awarded the honorary Emeritus Professor title.

The title recognises an esteemed academic who has officially retired but remains active within the University.

An expert in public policy, for more than 15 years at CDU Professor Gerritsen has researched and shared knowledge of remote and northern Australian development, intergovernmental relations, local government and policy management within the Northern Territory.

Throughout his career, Professor Gerritsen has supported more than 55 students to complete their PhDs and published more than 160 resources including books, articles, and research papers.

Professor Gerritsen said he was honoured to receive the prestigious recognition.

“Truthfully this recognition came as a bit of a surprise, and I am honoured to be recognised by the University and my colleagues,” Professor Gerritsen said.

“I am looking forward to be given the chance to continue my involvement as a mentor and using my knowledge to support future generations of students and researchers.”

CDU Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Scott Bowman congratulated Professor Gerritsen on his new title.

“Professor Gerritsen is a valuable member of the University’s community, and his work showcases what being a true educator is all about: a sharer of knowledge with a remarkable gift for mentorship, collaboration, and exchanging ideas,” Professor Bowman said.

“I extend my congratulations to all of this year’s graduates, whose achievements today will shape the Northern Territory and beyond for years to come.”
