Almost 2000 new university students have been offered a place at Charles Darwin University in 2023, with even more expected to take up studies in the Top End this year.

Despite a restriction placed on the number of places available for nursing students, the university still recorded an increase on the intake for previous years, up from 1784 in 2022 to 1835, excluding the nursing places offered.

More than 500 international students have been accepted, representing an 80 per cent increase on last year’s intake.

CDU Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Hilary Winchester said the latest numbers were a positive sign post-Covid.

“I am delighted to see that our student numbers are growing, both domestically and internationally especially after the last few years of the pandemic,” she said.

Late last year it was announced an additional 831 Commonwealth-supported places for students starting in 2023 and 2024.

The most popular undergraduate courses applied for this year were the Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Health Sciences, but a spokeswoman for the university said the data was changing every day.

There was also high interest in health and creative therapy courses.

Professor Winchester said the cohort of new students would bring plenty to the NT economy.

“This growth in student numbers is a positive for the Territory as well, as students are often a great source of part-time employment whilst studying, and they contribute towards the skilled workforce upon graduating,” she said.

“Our increase in international student numbers is a great sign that students from right across the globe are interested in studying with CDU.”

Attracting and retaining international students was a key issue identified during the NT News’ inaugural Future Northern Territory series.

Property experts have warned plans to grow the Territory’s overseas student population by 10,000 in the next five years would be dragged down by a lack of student housing.

Demographer Simon Kuestenmacher said international students and the economic injection they delivered to a city was critical to the NT government’s $40bn economy goal.

International students are financially extremely lucrative so any international student helps and any further investment into enabling us to attract international students is welcome and it amps up the population base, which is very important in order to get to that $40bn target,” Mr Kuestenmacher said.
