NT Police have arrested a man who allegedly approached a group of people with an edged weapon in Casuarina on Thursday night.

A police patrol noticed a 36-year-old man approach a group of people seated on the ground in a shopping centre carpark.

He allegedly produced the edged weapon as a came closer to the group.

The officers instructed him to drop the weapon which he did before being taken into custody without any further incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said that quick thinking resulted in a swift arrest.

“This man was very close to members of the public when he produced the weapon and quick thinking by our officers resulted in a swift arrest and no harm done to members of the public,” Mr Bland said.

The man was charged with going armed in public and possess / carry / use a controlled weapon.

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Friday.

Police arrest 17-year-old accused of assaulting school student

POLICE have arrested a 17-year-old male who allegedly assaulted a school student in Alice Springs on Thursday.

Just after 3pm, police say four youths were riding down Kempeana Cres when it is alleged one of them was assaulted by a 17-year-old male.

The youths returned to a nearby school and reported the incident to police.

The victim was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital and later released after being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police investigations identified and located the offender who was arrested and charged with one count each of going armed in public and assaulting a person who suffered harm.

The youth was bailed to appear before court later this month.

Fire scare in Darwin CBD

EMERGENCY services have been called to the Smith St Mall, with fire trucks understood to be at the Paspaley building.

The NT Fire Incident Map shows an automatic fire alarm was set off, with authorities notified at 10.53am.

Fire trucks were seen at the West Lane carpark.

Search on for youths

POLICE are searching for four youths who allegedly broke into an Alice Springs home in the early hours of Friday morning, stole a vehicle and then drove it into the Todd River.

Between midnight and 3.30am, police say the youths unlawfully entered a residence in Taylor Street, Araluen and found the keys for a Nissan Pathfinder and took off.

Southern Watch Commander Andrew Heath said the stolen vehicle was quickly recognised with the use of police CCTV cameras.

“We did a cordoned response for the vehicle in East Side, in which the offenders drove the car into the Todd River and became stuck,” he said.

“The offenders were all youths and they ran away.

“We’ve recovered the vehicle and we’ve towed it away for forensic processing in order to ID the offenders.”

Parap service station assault

NT Police are calling for information in relation to an assault that occurred at a Parap service station in early October.

A 58-year-old man was assaulted by an unknown man near a service station on the Stuart Highway in Parap during the early hours of October 8.

Prior to the assault the victim had confronted the offender who had allegedly stolen the victim’s property prior to the attack.

The victim was later taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The alleged offender is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, mid to late 20s, 180cm tall, solid build and was wearing dark clothing and black runners at the time of the attack.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dam-cam footage from the area between the hours of 2am and 2:30am, is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number 9814001.

‘VILE ACT’: Police officer allegedly spat on in Darwin CBD

A DARWIN police officer was allegedly spat on early morning in the Darwin CBD after responding to two men fighting.

Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Fields said the police were arresting a 39-year-old man when police claim he spat on an officer’s hand where she had a cut on Thursday about 1.40am.

Mr Fields said police would allege the man spat on the officer “as he was being put into the back of a police vehicle”.

“The police officer and that offender have both undergone blood tests – just in this current space with Covid and everything else, it’s just a really, really vile act,” Sgt Fields said.

Sgt Field said the men were “certainly known to us”.

“It was some level of family dispute where they were intoxicated that these two males were fighting over,” he said.

“It’s just on our end, I think the most frustrating part is the months of blood tests that this female police officer will have to go through and the impact it’s going to have on her life.”

Speaking generally, Sgt Fields sent a solemn message to anyone who thought spitting on a police officer was acceptable.

“ No Police Officer should be expected to tolerate such an abhorrent act,” he said

“Offenders found guilty of assaulting Police Officers will be subject to significant periods of imprisonment.”

The 39-year-old defendant appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Youths arrested

FOUR youths have been arrested after they allegedly forced their way into an Alice Springs business earlier this week.

The group of youths allegedly forced entry and rummaged through a business in the Todd Mall in the Alice Springs CBD just after 3.30am on Tuesday morning.

The group fled the scene once police arrived and officers apprehended a 12-year-old boy following a foot pursuit.

The youth will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

Further inquirers helped identify the remaining three alleged offenders being three male youths aged 13, 13 and 14.

Two youths will appear before court charged with one count of aggravated unlawful entry.

A third has been charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful entry and one count of obtain benefit by deception following two separate incidents earlier that evening.

How a routine car check allegedly led to a major drug bust

POLICE allege a small cannabis bust has led to the discovery of a drug operation based in a Berrimah home.

NT Police arrested a 48-year-old man and charged him with commercial drug possession on Tuesday.

Police will allege the man was found with less than a trafficable quantity of cannabis in a vehicle during a traffic apprehension.

A search of a Berrimah property allegedly uncovered 1.5kg of cannabis, a small amount of LSD, a large amount of cash, three mobile phones and a tablet device and evidence of ongoing drug supply.

Officers also allege the man was in possession of a large amount of fireworks.

He was charged with supply and possession of a commercial quantity of a schedule 2 drug, possessing less than trafficable quantity of a schedule 1 drug, supplying less than a commercial quantity of a schedule 1 drug, possessing or receiving property in the commission of an offence and possessing fireworks outside approved period.

The man was refused bail and due to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Darwin courts evacuated in fire scare

DARWIN’S courts had an exciting start to the morning with blaring alarms forcing alleged criminals, judges, lawyers and staff to flee the building.

The NT Fire Incident map reported the Supreme Court fire alarm was activated around 9.30am, Wednesday.

It is understood the incident was triggered by a tradie using an angle grinder, which sparked the emergency alarms.

Everyone was able to return to the court after 20 minutes.

NT PFES was contacted for comment.

Man falls from cliff at popular Darwin beach

A 70-year-old man fell from a Casuarina Beach cliff on Tuesday afternoon.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the man landed on the beach and was transported to hospital with “thankfully” only minor injuries.

“He did have a number of bumps and bruises from the fall,” Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin.

“He landed on the beach below – bit of a fall there and required assistance from police, fire and St John (NT).”

Mr Garraway urged people to be careful and remain cautious when enjoying the cliffs at Casuarina.

Police assault

A MAN allegedly threw a steel tyre lever at a 30-year-old police officer in Alice Springs about midnight on Monday.

Watch Commander Andrew Heath said the officer needed medical treatment.

“General Duties Patrol was dealing with a domestic violence incident on Gregory Tce when a Silver Commodore containing three females and one male drove past,” Cmdr Heath said.

“The tyre lever hit a male police officer in the leg causing a wound and the vehicle drove off towards the Todd River.”

Cmdr Heath said the commodore was found at the Hidden Valley Vamp where three women helped police with inquiries.

“The male offender left the location prior to police arrival so this matter has been referred to the Criminal Investigation Branch,” he said.

Cmdr Heath called the incident “a cowardly act”.

“The men and women of the police force go out on a daily basis to keep the community safe,” he said.

“They don’t need their job to be made any more difficult by being assaulted while they’re trying to help people.”

Alleged Stabbing

A 30-YEAR-OLD man allegedly used an edged weapon in a savage stabbing which left a man with serious injuries.

NT Police allege the man assaulted his 32-year-old relative with an edge weapon outside a business on Casuarina Dr, at 11pm on Friday.

The man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with serious injuries and remains in a stable condition.

Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad, Sex Crime Section and the Drug and Organised Crime Section are involved in the ongoing investigation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Malogorski said the 30-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday morning and was in custody.

“We urge anyone, particularly motorists, who witnessed or have footage of the incident, to contact police,” Sgt Malogorski said.

He called on witnesses to call 131 444 and quote the reference 9865356.

Man hit by a car in CBD

A MAN was sent to the Royal Darwin Hospital after being hit by a car on Mitchell St about 2.05am on Sunday.

Senior Sergeant Kaye Pemberton said the 29-year-old had sustained a minor head injury after he was knocked to the ground by the car.

“He was alcohol affected crossing the road and not watching where cars were and he was knocked to the ground by a car and hit his head when he hit the ground,” Sgt Pemberton said.

Sgt Pemberton said the driver stopped and had returned a negative alcohol and drug test.

“It’s a 40km zone – it doesn’t appear that excessive speed was involved,” she said.

“He’s (the 29-year-old man) is going to be all right.”

Man pepper sprayed in Palmerston

A 30-year-old driver was pepper sprayed by police after he “violently” resisted arrest and failed to supply a breath analysis in Palmerston at about 2.18am on Sunday.

Senior Sergeant Kaye Pemberton said the man was driving in a suspicious manner which led to suspicion he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

“We had a short pursuit with a driver that failed to stop and who then resisted the arrest violently and was subdued with OC spray (pepper spray),” Sgt Pemberton said.

“He was taken into custody in Palmerston watch house where he was requested to submit to a breath analysis and refused.

“He’s in custody and will be facing charges in relation to traffic offences and also resisted arrest.”

Child exploitation arrests

A 45-YEAR-OLD man has been allegedly busted with child abuse material, drugs and firearms stacked in a Bees Creek home.

A joint operation involving the Australian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team and NT Police arrested the man following a search warrant at the home, 35km southeast of Darwin, on Thursday.

Police allege he was in possession of computers and mobile telephones containing child abuse material, as well as prohibited weapons, dangerous drugs, and unsecured firearms and ammunition.

NT Police Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Vanessa Barton said authorities would continue to work across jurisdictions “to keep our children safe and apprehend perpetrators of child sex offences”.

AFP Detective Sergeant Richard Matejic said possessing child abuse material was a serious offence.

“Possessing this material is not a victimless crime – every one of these images is an offence against a real child victim,” Sgt Matejic said.

He was arrested and charged with 24 offences, including six counts of possessing child abuse material, two counts of procuring persons under 16 for sexual activity, transmitting child abuse material.

He was also charged with possessing a prohibited weapon, failure to meet storage requirements, possessing ammunition and three firearms without a licence, drug trafficking, failure to take care with a syringe and breach of bail.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court on December 15.

Pair allegedly turn on youths in Darwin park

A PAIR allegedly armed themselves and turned on a group of youths in a Darwin park.

Northern Territory Police have charged two people in relation to an assault in Nakara in October.

Police allege a 36-year-old man and 29-year-old woman were involved in an altercation with a group of youths at Johnson Park at 5.30pm on October 15.

The pair allegedly armed themselves with weapons and assaulted two people from the group.

Police claimed the two also stole items from the group, before fleeing the area.

On Thursday morning the man and women were arrested by Serious Crime Squad detectives at a home in Nakara.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Malogorski said investigations into the incident were ongoing.

“Police urge anyone experiencing anti-social behaviour to immediately make contact on 131 444 or in an emergency to call triple-0,” Sgt Malogorski said.

The two were charged with one count each of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

They were granted bail, to appear at the Darwin Local Court on December 14.

Police investigate Alice Springs break in

NT Police are investigating a break in that took place in the Alice Springs suburb of Gillen overnight on Thursday.

A residential property in Poeppel Gardens, Gillen was broken into overnight between 8pm on Thursday and 3am in the early hours of Friday morning.

The break in was reported early in the morning with the point of entry being a sliding-glass door.

The police are continuing to investigate the incident with the contents stolen still unknown.

Man arrested in relation to double car fire

NT POLICE have arrested a man following a two vehicle fire in Katherine earlier this week.

The Katherine Criminal Investigations Branch allege that the 30-year-old set fire to a vehicle in Katherine South.

The fire then spread to another vehicle that was parked alongside.

The man has been charged with two counts of arson and has been remanded to appear in Katherine Local Court on Thursday.

“Police continue to call for information and would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist the investigation,” Constable Kylie Dutton said.

Police investigate car fire mystery

NT POLICE are investigating after two cars were set alight, causing a block of flats to be evacuated in Katherine.

Police received reports of a car fire on Victoria Highway in Katherine South.

Officers arrived to find two vehicles fully engulfed.

Residents in an adjacent block of flats were safely evacuated from the building as a precaution.

Constable Kylie Dutton said police believe this was an isolated incident and there was no reason for public concern.

“However we are calling for witnesses to come forward,” Cst Dutton said.

She urged anyone with information, CCTV or mobile footage of any unusual activity in this area between 10.30pm and 11.15pm to call police on 131 444 or Crimestoppers, and quote the reference 9862471.

Cattle ordered to moooooooooo-ve along by police

CATTLE are roaming around the highway after a truck overturned at Batchelor.

NT Police said they were diverting traffic around the loose animals who escaped when the truck rolled near a Batchelor Stuart Highway turn-off at 12.30pm.

“There are no reported injuries but a number of cattle are roaming around the area,” a NT PFES spokesman said.

NT Police have put detours in place and are warning motorists to expect delays.

“If you’re heading into Darwin, please use Crater Lake Road, then Batchelor Road to return to the Highway and vice-versa if you’re heading in the other direction,” a Facebook post said.

Bottles allegedly thrown at police

ALLEGED booze bandits are accused of throwing bottles at police as they were chased from a Casuarina business.

NT Police charged a 22-year-old and a 25-year-old in connection to the robbery of a Trower Rd shopping centre, on Monday night.

Police allege the pair went into the business around 8.20pm, stole some alcohol before assaulting a worker.

The staff member was left with minor injuries.

Police used CCTV to track the alleged offenders to Bradshaw Terrace.

They allege as the officer chased them on foot, the 25-year-old threw bottles at police.

Serious Crime Squad Detectives charged the 22-year-old with aggravated robbery

and two counts of breach of bail.

The 25-year-old was charged with aggravated robbery and assaulting police.

They were remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Man charged after alleged coward punch

A MAN has been charged after he allegedly coward punched another in the Darwin CBD in September.

Police allege the 30-year-old assaulted another man in an unprovoked attack, causing serious injuries.

On Tuesday, he was charged with recklessly endangering life.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Youths charged over stolen vehicle

NT Police have apprehended six youths who were spotted allegedly recklessly driving a stolen vehicle in the Alice Springs CBD on the weekend.

A vehicle was reported as stolen from a hotel earlier in the week.

On Saturday it was again seen allegedly being driven recklessly in the Alice Springs CBD area at 2.30am.

Motorbike patrols, general duty officers, Strike Force Viper and the K9 unit worked together to spike the vehicle using a Tyre Deflation Device on Larapinta Dr.

The vehicle travelled a further kilometre before coming to a stop on the side of the road.

It was there that the K9 unit and motorbike patrol arrested the six occupants, aged between 13 and 17-years-old.

They were then transported to the Alice Springs Watch House with two of the youths having since been remanded.

Another has been granted bail while the remaining three will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

Woman in serious condition following single vehicle rollover

UPDATE: A WOMAN is in a serious condition in hospital following a single vehicle rollover in Girraween early on Tuesday morning.

Just after 1.30am the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre received several calls that a vehicle had rolled over in the vicinity of road works on Power Rd in Girraween.

Upon arrival a woman was found trapped in her car and had to be cut free by Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service.

She was stabilised on the scene by St John Ambulance paramedics and was quickly taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment.

Speaking on ABC Radio St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the woman was currently in a serious condition in hospital.

“It was a single vehicle rollover. With the assistance of the NT Police and Fire Service they were able to retrieve her from the vehicle,” Mr Garraway said.

“She did have a number of serious injuries and is recovering in hospital at the moment in a serious condition so hopefully she makes a full recovery over the next few weeks.”

Power Rd is currently open and an investigation has begun into the circumstances of the crash.

Two men arrested following bottle shop robbery

TWO men were arrested after allegedly stealing from a bottle shop at Casuarina Shopping Centre on Monday night.

The pair allegedly took possession of a quantity of alcohol at 8.15pm before attempting to leave without paying.

They were confronted by bottle shop staff and one of the males allegedly assaulted an employee allowing both men to escape with the stolen items.

NT police were notified and located both men at the nearby bus interchange soon after.

The males attempted to run from police throwing their stolen liquor at the officers.

They were both arrested and currently remain in police custody for questioning.

Police rescue family stranded at Gunn Point

NT Police rescued a family who found themselves trapped deep in bushland for several hours late on Monday.

A family were out four-wheel driving when their car became bogged somewhere at Gunn Point.

A 34-year-old man tried his best to pull his vehicle out of the trap but was unable to do so.

After being unable to recover his vehicle and with no phone reception the man left his family in search of help.

He walked several hours through bushland until he was able to gain a weak mobile signal which he used to contact emergency services.

Police were able to triangulate the phone allowing for both the man and his family to be rescued unharmed.

Sax appeal: Cops on hunt for mysterious instrumentalist

UPDATE: NT Police are appealing for information after a mysterious saxophone materialised in the Darwin central business district on Monday.

A police spokesman said the wayward musical instrument had been found at the Darwin Bus Exchange and handed in to the police station.

“If this is your instrument and you are able to recite the serial number or other identifying features please contact 08 8901 0208 and quote reference number 581105/001,” he said.

Charges after Mitchell St break in

LATE-NIGHT revelries attracted the attention of Darwin police leading to four arrests and more than a dozen charges on Monday.

Northern Territory Police arrested four people in relation to an unlawful entry at a business in Darwin City overnight.

Police allege several unknown individuals unlawfully entered the business on Mitchell St, at 1.30am, causing minor damage and stealing a quantity of alcohol.

Three hours later, at 4.20am, CCTV operators were alerted to four males allegedly carrying alcohol towards Spillet Park.

Police arrested two 17-year-olds, a 37-year-old and a 45-year-old.

Detectives from Strike Force Trident will charge the 45-year-old with five counts of aggravated unlawful entry and stealing.

Police said the 37-year-old and 17-year-old were expected to be each charged with one count of aggravated unlawful entry and stealing.

The other 17-year-old will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 2005.

They are all expected to appear in Darwin Local Court at a later date.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said investigations into this incident were ongoing.

Sgt Bland called on anyone who witnessed the unlawful entry to contact 131 444 or Crime Stoppers, quoting the reference number 9860953.

Woman arrested after stabbing

A WOMAN has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a man in Tennant Creek on the weekend.

Police visited the home at 4.20pm Saturday to find 41-year-old man in a critical condition. He was taken to the Tennant Creek Hospital, then flown to Adelaide for more treatment.

The 48-year-old woman, who was known to the man, was charged with one count of aggravated assault.

She wall face the Tennant Creek Local Court on Wednesday.

Family in hospital after rollover

A TERRITORY family were taken to hospital following a rollover on the Arnhem Highway.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said two young children, as well as their mother and father, were in the vehicle when it crashed on the Arnhem Highway, 40km from Darwin on Sunday.

Mr Garraway said the family were able to get out of the car and were treated for minor injuries.

Paramedics assessed and treated them for minor injuries, before they were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.
