A former political staffer has been appointed to the NT’s top hotels job

The appointment of a new boss at a leading peak body will spawn a new era for a key Territory industry. Read what’s changing.

Doubts raised over effectiveness of NT alcohol laws

A former political adviser and public policy expert is the Northern Territory’s new alcohol industry boss.

Cathy Simmonds, who worked for former Infrastructure Minister Joel Bowden and before that the now Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen, is Hospitality NT’s new chief executive officer.

The sector contributes almost $430m to the Territory economy and employs more than 17,000 workers.

A statement released by Hospitality NT said Ms Simmonds, who will start work on Monday, was a standout candidate from a competitive field of applicants in a national recruitment campaign.

“Cathy brings a wealth of expertise to Hospitality NT, with a proven track record of driving impressive, inspirational change within government and an in-depth understanding of Territory and Federal politics,” the statement said.

“Her skills in governance, community engagement, and partnership-building make her uniquely suited to guide Hospitality NT into an exciting new chapter.

“As CEO, Cathy’s focus will be on bolstering the Northern Territory’s vibrant hospitality sector by prioritising visitor attraction, supporting small businesses, and advancing meaningful alcohol reform.

“Over the coming weeks, Cathy will meet with members and corporate partners to ensure a seamless transition for the Association.

“Cathy’s appointment signals a significant step forward for Hospitality NT. Her leadership promises to strengthen the organisation’s advocacy efforts and elevate the role of the hospitality sector in shaping the Northern Territory’s future.”

Ms Simmonds takes over the high-profile industry role from Alex Bruce, who is now chief of staff to chief minister Lia Finocchiaro.

“I am incredibly excited to champion the Northern Territory’s dynamic hospitality industry - not just as a cornerstone of our economy, but as an integral part of our Territory lifestyle,” she said.

“With my experience in leadership, policy, and building strong relationships, I am confident that I can bring new energy and direction to Hospitality NT.”

Her tenure in the role will include working with the new government on the repeal of the controversial alcohol floor price, a legacy policy of the former administration.”
