2025-26 NTFL live stream: Watch Southern Districts v St Mary’s in Round 10

St Mary's has honoured club founder Ted Egan with a dramatic one-point victory over reigning premiers Southern Districts, with Luke Patterson the last-goal hero. Watch the REPLAY here.

St Mary’s proved their character lifting at the right moment to see off Southern Districts and honour the memory of their club founder.

The passing of Ted Egan, who founded St Mary’s in 1952 and was the club’s first captain, was raw in the mind of the Saints’ team following his death on Thursday.

There was plenty of spirit that the then-sixth placed side brought their encounter against the reigning premiers, who themselves were wanting to bounce back from their first loss in 17 games.

The match more than fit the occasion with both sides sharing moments in front, but it was Saints who saw it out with a late Luke Patterson score to win 8.8 (56) to 7.13 (55).

Cyclone Fina and the bye meant the Saints hadn’t played since their heavy loss to Nightcliff, in which they also lost their premier forward Jackson Calder to an ACL injury.

The Green Machine turned those losses into a positive, winning the early exchanges and getting goals out of Domonic Grant and Liam Read to set the early tone.

The Districts’ midfield including Matthew Johnston and Quinton Narkle, as well as the ever explosive Jed Anderson, countered as best as they could.

But they ran into a similar issue to their recent loss against Nightcliff, with accuracy in front of goal, particularly with Steven Motlop out with suspension, lacking.

That was until a wonder spell from Beau Schwarze at the top of the second quarter where he knocked through three game turning goals with brilliant snaps.

It put Districts back where they like to be most, on top and in control, and they rode out the remainder of that term on a similar high.

Connor Giddings was indispensable for the side down back, and in tandem with Wyatt Ryan, denied attempts on goal from a surging Dylan Landt.

Landt got his scores in the third term and Kieren Parnell played a key role on Schwarze to keep him quiet on the scoring front from then on, excepting a missed karate kick at goal.

Connor West was another Saints mid who showed his strengths on his return to the outfit, proving again why he was so highly rated for them last season.

Josh Smithson and Jackson Braunthal were other big contributors for the Saints midfield in what was a big battleground where for Crocs Mitchell Bidmade was an influential figure.

The defensive and midfield pressure again went against Districts who despite dominating inside 50s couldn’t convert the best part of their chances into goals.

Though Will Farrer with his high bombs still racked up three for the host and the constant pace of Hewago Oea proved important in the race for the loose balls.

A slew of late behinds for Saints including a poster from first gamer Kairyce Lowah could have ultimately proved the difference at the end of the third quarter.

But still when the dying minutes came it was a five point difference in favour to Districts with scoring momentum in their favour.

Until Saints found their break feeding off late free kicks and Patterson took his chance to score and from there it was about wasting time as the Crocs threatened to the final siren.

“We spoke before the game about needing a scalp, we’d lost to the top four teams so for us to be considered a good team we need to beat a good team,” Landt said.

“We came in with the focus after a couple off to take a scalp and for us to have done that in a four quarter effort is a great feeling and I’m proud of the boys.

“Losing our leading goal scorer and the best forward in the competition wasn’t ideal but we spoke about turning it into a positive as in allows us to be unpredictable when we go inside 50.

“We found different avenues to go inside and had to work together, so to win without him helps build plenty of confidence.

“It’s been a knock on us in the past that we haven’t always come back when down, but you have to be brave and take the game on when down by a goal, it’s character building for us.”

The Saints’ skipper said the passing of the club’s first captain and founder Ted Egan in the week was not lost on the group.

“We had a few of the past players and Uncle Vic Ludwig speak before the game on the impact Ted Egan had on the club from the start,” Landt said.

“He helped build the club and was a big part getting the Tiwi Islander people into footy, so we definitely spoke about him and to get a win for him means a lot to the club.”

PREVIEW

Southern Districts’ winning run of 17 matches was brought to an end last week, but with lessons learned they can restart their streak, but that means beating a rested St Mary’s.

Every moment of the match will be streamed live and free from 4pm on Saturday by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long NTFL coverage.

WHY TO WATCH

The Crocs were knocked down by Nightcliff in a top quality face-off at TIO Stadium last round, but with all the talent in their list Districts won’t stay down for long.

Matt Johnston and Matt Shannon have been consistent for the side and run the midfield well alongside the marquee players such as Quinton Narkle.

Jed Anderson was one of the standouts last match and was explosive on the carry while former Gold Coast player Hewago Oea showed his pace again.

They’ve beaten Saints three times since that Round 8 encounter of last season, including in last year’s grand final, and will back themselves and their talent to get it done again.

St Mary’s, meanwhile, are the most rested side in the competition with Cyclone Fina and a bye round giving sore bodies some extra time to heal.

The Green Machine will have to change tactically with spearhead Jackson Calder out of action for the foreseeable but Dylan Landt is still expected to see plenty of the ball out the middle.

There will be a little extra for Saints to play for this weekend as well given the recent death of the club’s co-founder and first ever captain Ted Egan.
