The CLP government funding commitment, split over three years, will help make the leadership and civic education program more inclusive and accessible, particularly for those in remote and under-represented areas.
Delivered by the Y Northern Territory, Youth Parliament provides a platform for Territorians aged 15 to 25 to engage with democratic processes, build leadership and teamwork skills, and raise the issues that matter to their communities.
The 2025 program brings together 36 participants from across the Territory including Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Alpurrurulam.
Throughout the year, participants develop and draft Youth Bills based on real-world issues.
In September, they will debate their bills in Parliament House.
“Youth Parliament amplifies the voices of young people on issues that matter to them,” Y Northern Territory chief executive Emma Bunting said.
“The impact of this program is far-reaching, beyond learning a new skill focused on civic education and engagement.
“(It’s) not just a leadership program for young people, it is an experience that has the power and ability to positively impact the trajectory of a young person’s life, with many alumni in the NT and across Australia, making a real difference in communities today.”
Minister for Youth Jinson Charls said Youth Parliament helped our next generation grow into confident, engaged citizens.
“Young people are full of energy, ideas and optimism and we want to make sure they have every chance to help shape the Territory’s future.
“By expanding access and supporting regional participation, we’re ensuring young people from all corners of the Territory can seize this opportunity.”
