A BICYCLE rider pulled over by police on a Toowoomba street and found with cannabis and a knife said he had stolen the items from a mate.
After being halted by a police patrol while cycling on Glenvale Road about 12.20am, February Jessie Dillon Metcalf-Jenkins said he had been at a mate's place where people were smoking cannabis.
Police searched his belongings and found a folding knife and 13.1g of cannabis in a bag.
The 23-year-old told police he had stolen the cannabis from his mate and had intended smoking it over the coming days, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.
Asked what he had the knife for, "he said he likes knives", police prosecutor Natalie Bugden told the court.
He had then failed to turn up at the police station within seven days to give his identifying particulars and was charged with contravening a police direction.
A police search of his Glenvale home on May 22 had turned up 4.5g of cannabis, a homemade water pipe for smoking the drug and digital scales for weighing it, Sergeant Bugden said.
Metcalf-Jenkins had been placed on 18 months probation in May last year for drug related offences, she said.
The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to all offences.
His solicitor Amber Acreman said her client started using cannabis at 14 and ecstasy at 19 and had gone "downhill" from there.
However, he instructed that he had not used drugs for some time, she said.
Magistrate Kay Ryan sentenced him to 12 months probation and fined him $250.
