Toowoomba has become the official home of a revolutionised snack with the production team behind its creation praised for thinking outside the “box”.
After three years of product research and the construction of a manufacturing centre, Scarecrow Foods has released its first product PopBox.
A twist on the traditional concept of popcorn in a bag, the innovative product is microwavable popcorn served in a foldable, recyclable box, complete with a ventilation system.
Scarecrow Foods chief executive officer Mark Adamson said the newly established product was a natural, healthy snack alternative, contained no palm oil or GMO and was free of dairy and animal products.
“We were looking for a food item in the snack food space and this just ticked all the boxes,” he said.
“Popping corn pops because the moisture inside tries to rapidly escape and creates steam, so our ventilation process allows for a much more natural pop (than bag popcorn) and makes it taste more like cinema popcorn.”
Containing Bean Growers Australia popping corn, PopBox offers five flavours including butter, mega butter, lite butter, sea salt and sweet and salty.
Unable to disclose the three additional flavours in the works, Mr Adamson said snack enthusiasts could expect them to be bold and unique.
After considering sites in Central NSW, Brisbane and the Burnett for its manufacturing base, the company has set up a 980sq m, purpose-built facility in Toowoomba.
Mr Adamson said since the product was first issued to independent and convenience stores across Toowoomba in late December, the feedback had been positive, with the range becoming particularly popular in the remote parts of the region.
Currently stocked in more than 50 retailers in the Darling Downs, plans have been established to expand further across the state and country.
With 11 staff members employed, 20 investors on board and with about 10,000 items produced per day, Mr Adamson said the vision for the business was very promising.
“You never know with new products but the benefit of this product is wherever it’s been produced internationally, it has been successful,” he said.
