THE town of Kingsthorpe is growing up, with plans for its first supermarket going before Toowoomba Regional Council.
Developer Lee Bermingham said the growing town was under-serviced, with the closest supermarket in Oakey.
The Foodworks supermarket will also include a coffee shop and bakery.
Mr Bermingham said it would provide jobs for residents of the township of about 2300 people.
The supermarket will be built on 9-13 Kingsthorpe Haden Rd at the site of Allens Rural & Hardware and close to the Gowrie Hotel Motor Inn.
The application was lodged by Toowoomba-based town planners Precinct Urban Planning and includes a provision for 22 car parks.
Landscaping and shade tree plantings will be installed to improve the amenity of the site.
The application also seeks a permit for a self-storage facility and an associated subdivision.
Clearwell Properties is behind the development.
Staff at Allens Rural & Hardware were unable to confirm future plans for the store.
