Victorian teen ‘grateful’ after stolen wheelchair located dumped

A teen who had her wheelchair stolen days out from Christmas is “grateful” after a community member found the item dumped more than 20km away.

A “grateful” young teenage girl has been reunited with her wheelchair after a good Samaritan found the mobility device days after it was stolen.

The motorised wheelchair was stored inside her family’s silver Hyundai Santa Fe when the car was stolen from the small Victorian town of Numurkah overnight Thursday.

Local police put out an alert on Friday hoping to find the $14,000 piece of equipment which was located the following day dumped in Zeerust — about 25km south.

“A member of the public located the motorised wheelchair dumped in Zeerust around lunchtime and took it to Numurkah Police Station,” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

“Officers were pleased to be able return the specially fitted and designed wheelchair to its 13-year-old owner in time for Christmas.”

The spokeswoman said the teenager was “grateful” for its return.

The vehicle, which had registered plates of 1UK-9RO, has not been located and police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

It’s believed the vehicle was stolen from Quinn Street sometime between 10pm on Thursday and 9.30am on Friday.

The wheelchair was imported from the United States and “specially fitted and designed” for the teenage girl.
