Tony Mokbel’s lawyer Sarah Tricarico has been charged with attempting to pervert court of justice

A high-profile gangland lawyer has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice after police allegedly uncovered evidence as part of a worldwide sting.

Solicitor Sarah Tricarico, who represents jailed gangland figure Tony Mokbel, was arrested on Thursday along with a second person by Victoria Police investigators from the criminal proceeds squad.

Ms Tricarico’s arrest came just before she was set to appear in court for Mokbel as part of proceedings relating to his marathon appeal against convictions.

Victoria Police confirmed the arrests in a statement.

“A 38-year-old Maribyrnong woman and a 33-year-old Coburg man were arrested and subsequently charged with attempt to pervert the course of justice,” a police statement said.

Both were bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 18.

The charges are linked to evidence uncovered by police during Operation Ironside in 2021.

Operation Ironside was the result of the development of an encrypted APP known as AN0M, developed by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Australian Federal Police.

The unprecedented sting enabled authorities to read serious organised crime messages in real time after it was disseminated throughout the underworld.

Ms Tricarico has been handling the Lawyer X appeal for Mokbel, which began in 2017.

Mokbel’s bid for freedom will come before the Appeals Court this year.

Ms Tricarico did not respond to calls by the Herald Sun for comment.
