Exclusive: A man accused of committing horrific bestiality offences under the pseudonym “Beast Boy” has rekindled his long-term relationship from behind bars with his boyfriend, who posted messages of support and a selfie dressed in bondage gear.

Mick Mepham was horrified when he learnt last April his partner Colin Baker, 38, had been hit with more than 60 criminal charges including bestiality, producing and disseminating bestiality material, and accessing child abuse material.

A team of police officers and RSPCA inspectors stormed their home in Moorland, near Taree in northern NSW, arrested Baker and seized computers, hard drives, and Mr Mepham’s seven-year-old rescue chihuahua, Loppy – an alleged victim of the sexual abuse.

Police further allege Baker abused a golden retriever, a chicken and a ram, and filmed himself violating a dead kangaroo, and shared material using encrypted messaging apps.

Mr Mepham has not been accused of wrongdoing and is not facing any charges in relation to the matter.

While Mr Mepham initially told media the allegations were horrific and it was difficult to love someone accused of committing crimes against animals, messages posted online show his romance with Baker is not dead.

In the messages, sent just weeks ago and obtained by this masthead, Mr Mepham told a social media user he was still in a relationship with Baker, “and I honestly believe he can be fixed and that everyone deserves a second chance”.

“No one deserves to be alone … No one should be alone without moral support.”

This masthead can confirm Baker faces 19 charges of accessing, possessing and sending child abuse material.

In May, Mr Mepham uploaded a photo of himself with Baker, just days after police stormed their property. One person appeared shocked by the photo, using the comments section to ask, “why???”.

Mr Mepham replied: “Can’t fall out of love … will get him the help he needs.”

In November, he uploaded a selfie wearing bondage attire similar to that which Baker had worn on a fetish website while he (Baker) used the name “beast_boy1”.

Since then, he has posted a number of photos of Baker on his personal page this year. The latest was in March.

Court records indicate a number of Baker’s original charges will be withdrawn when his matter returns to court on May 12. There are 42 charges remaining.

They include 13 counts of bestiality, four counts of producing bestiality material, six counts of disseminating bestiality material, one count of possessing bestiality material, 16 counts of using a carriage service to access child abuse material, two counts of possessing child abuse material, and one count of using a carriage service to transmit child abuse material to self.

Baker’s arrest followed an investigation by the NSW Police sex crime squad’s child exploitation unit, which started targeting child abuse material online last February. They allegedly came across an account by a man using the “beast boy” online pseudonym.

Police allege the profile had a large presence and used encrypted apps to share bestiality material, and alleged Loppy was among the animals that appeared in the online videos.

“His online presence indicates there is a lot more than what we have so far viewed. We have viewed in excess of 500 videos at this point,” Sex Crimes squad commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said after Baker’s arrest last year.

Bail was formally denied. Baker has yet to enter a plea.

His matter is up for mention at Taree Local Court on May 12.
