‘Disgusting’: police investigate political ‘smear campaign’

A Liberal Party campaign truck was smeared with faeces on Wednesday night. Police have been called, while both major parties have condemned the incident.

Police have launched an investigation after a Liberal Party campaign truck was smeared with faeces in Goulburn.

A volunteer discovered the vandalism on Wednesday night and was reportedly ‘shaken’ by the incident.

Liberal candidate for Eden-Monaro Jo van der Plaat told The Daily Telegraph it was ‘completely disgusting.’

‘I got a call yesterday about it. It was really distressing for me to find out that one of my volunteers found that and had to sort it out. In the local community there has been absolute outrage. It is the vilest and lowest act you can do. It’s dirty campaigning’ she said.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed it was ‘investigating a malicious damage incident to a small truck in Goulburn.

‘Between 12pm and 9:45pm on Wednesday, a truck parked on McDermott Drive, Goulburn was vandalised with faeces.’

Photos obtained by this masthead show a truck smeared with faeces on the side and around the door. The vehicle was displaying a Liberal ad, criticising Labor’s ‘ute tax’, with the line ‘we can’t afford three more years of Labor.’ Pictured are Eden-Monaro MP Kristy McBain and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

A spokesperson for Ms McBain said she ‘absolutely condemns the incident. Her campaign was not involved. Everyone should engage respectfully in the election campaign and the laws should be followed.’

Eden-Monaro is currently held by Labor with a margin of roughly 6%.
