One of the men who sparked security concerns after confronting Anthony Albanese in a Melbourne hotel lobby on Tuesday night has posted photos wielding rifles, pistols, and even a “rocket launcher”.
Daniel Jones, owner of Melbourne ‘self-defence’ outfit Tactical Force Combatives, identified himself as the second of two right-wing video producers who filmed themselves demanding answers of the PM over housing immigration.
In a Facebook video on Thursday morning, Mr Jones said he “walked straight through the lobby door” before confronting the Prime Minister, before conceding he “could (have) been seen as a minor threat”.
“I walked clean through the front door of the lobby because there was no security. I walked up and ordered myself coffee and decided to sit down and flip through Facebook and relax and enjoy my coffee,” he said.
Mr Jones said there were a few security personnel watching a perimeter and some guarding the PM, but nobody questioned him.
“There’s no details I can give you about some James Bond stuff. It was literally just walk through the lobby door,” Mr Jones said.
“It wasn’t hard. They talk about beefed-up security, (but) there was no issue.”
In his video, Mr Jones said that the PM’s security detail should have done more to anticipate “threats” when protecting the PM.
“Look at your strengths, look at your weaknesses, look at your opportunities, look at your threats,” he said.
“I can see how we could be seen as a minor threat because it upsets people, (but) we’re not a major threat.”
Mr Albanese repeatedly backed the Australian Federal Police.
Asked if he had information on how protesters and other members of the public had consistently been able to find him, including crashing press conferences, Mr Albanese said “it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to broadcast it, frankly”.
“I have faith in the AFP, as I’ve said before, I have no intention of going into security, discussions, that’s not in the interests of security,” he said.
Mr Albanese insisted security concerns hadn’t slowed him down from hitting the campaign trail.
“I think it’s really important, and it’s something that I’ve done – I go into uncontrolled environments,” he said.
On his Facebook page, Mr Jones is pictured with multiple firearms, including one photo with a pistol.
“What skills have you been training lately?” He said in the post.
In another, he declares he was having a “bit of fun with a rocket launcher”.
Mr Jones’ group previously declared it would set up “community response groups” to tackle local crime, something Victoria Police strongly urged against.
Mr Jones denied suggestions he was part of a “vigilante” group in his Facebook video.
Mr Jones is not accused of breaking any laws by confronting the PM in his hotel.
