Families concerned about youth mental health

A Queensland schoolgirl left her family a heartbreaking six-word note before she tragically took her own life after battling mental health issues and bullying.

Isla Marschke, 14, died by suicide at her family’s home in Bundaberg South, over 360km north of Brisbane, on Tuesday.

Her mother found her in the backyard that evening and performed CPR but she could sadly not be saved.

Isla, who had suffered “awful” bullying and years of existing mental health issues, had left a short note with her phone password in her bedroom for her family.

“I’m sorry, I love you, mum,” the note read.

Her devastated mother Christie Jacobson is calling for more funding for mental health support in regional areas, after she spent months desperately trying to find a child psychologist to help her daughter.

“I was constantly turned away because she was too young or their books were full,” she told the publication.

“Follow-up care was almost impossible. I can’t tell you the amount of instances I would ask for help and be told ‘no, no, no’.”

During this time, Ms Jacboson said her daughter was dealing with bullying and “family dynamic issues”.

“But there wasn’t really a lead-up to it,” she explained. “We are all totally devastated.”

The 14-year-old, who had been diagnosed with anxiety, OCD and autism, was struggling to fit in at school and had left to undertake home learning three months ago in July.

“She’d been struggling for quite a while. Last year, two of her closest former friends started bullying her. One of them would post TikTok videos calling her a rat and stuff,” her old sister, Ava, told the publication.

The 16-year-old said she’s had to step in and tell bullies to leave her young sister alone.

“They were just awful to her.”

Ava was the last person to speak with her sister before she died.

Earlier that day, the sisters were at home happily chatting about their upcoming birthdays, before Ava had to leave for work.

“It’s my birthday next Friday and hers is on the 24th, so she was just talking about how she got me a present,” Ava recalled.

“She seemed really fine.”

The family have started a GoFundMe for Isla, who has been remembered as a beloved sister, and talented singer with a “wicked sense of humour”.

“We are heartbroken to share that our beloved sister, Isla, has tragically ended her life,” the fundraiser reads.

“Isla at her best of times was a light in our lives, and we really want to honour her memory with a beautiful farewell.”

“Your contributions will help us provide Isla with the service she deserves and ease the financial burden on our family for the next couple of weeks.”

The family thanked others for their kindness and support during the challenging time.

Over $46,000 has been raised at the time of publication.
