Australian Olympian Ariarne Titmus admits she is fond of the finer things in life, revealing her “guilty pleasure” is splurging on fashion and handbags.

“I have expensive taste in fashion and it can sometimes be dangerous,” the two-time gold medallist said.

After her success in Tokyo, the champion swimmer treated herself to “a couple of new handbags” and upgraded her car, which she first bought when she was just 17.

Despite loving to occasionally splurge on a “delicious meal” at a fine dining restaurant, the 21-year-old is conscious of not sending herself broke, unlike other elite athletes.

“Safeguarding is incredibly important,” she said.

“I do this by implementing simple habits into my day to day life, like tracking my spending, considering high interest savings accounts, having goals and thinking about worthwhile investments.”

The champion swimmer has fond childhood memories making money with her sister off the family’s chickens.

“We used to make our own labels to put on eggs carton and sell our eggs to the neighbours for $2 a dozen,” she said.

Titmus, who has been announced as the ambassador of Bank of Queensland’s new national banking app, myBOQ, said she was always working towards a goal, be it in savings or the pool.

Like many young Australians, she has her heart set on buying a home.

“Perhaps it’s my competitive nature, but I love having a benchmark to work towards,” she said.

“I would love to purchase a property in the near future, so I am setting savings goals to help me achieve that.”

Titmus, who broke the world record for the women‘s 400m freestyle at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide last month, is not alone in that goal.

New research by Chillur, a cryptocurrency portfolio investment service, found 37 per cent of Australians aged 18-34 were currently saving for a house deposit, while 23 per cent could no afford to get on the property ladder.

Titmus’ myBOQ ambassador announcement comes after she called for fairness in the transgender swimming debate earlier this week.

“I love swimming, everyone here loves swimming and I hope that … FINA come up with rules that make it fair and enjoyable for everyone,” Titmus said.

The myBOQ app allows users to set spending budgets on things like groceries and open up to nine accounts for managing different savings goals.

One feature Titmus liked was the ability to round up her transactions to the nearest dollar, with the extra charge going straight into one of her savings accounts.

Group Executive Retail Banking and ME Bank chief executive Martine Jager said it was on its way to being the country’s leading cloud-based digital bank.

“The app has created waves since hitting the app store, with close to 20,000 new accounts opened,” she said.

The BOQ is not the fist bank to be digitising products. Westpac and Commonwealth Bank have also recently flagged investment in new digital banking apps.
