An infamous brothel owner who pushed to legalise sex work and even ran for lord mayor of Adelaide has died.

Stormy Summers is understood to have died after a short illness at Lyell McEwin Hospital on Sunday, just three days before her 78th birthday.

Ms Summers was one of the city’s most famous madams and a controversial character with alleged underworld links and run-ins with police.

Close friend Martin Herren told The Advertiser on Tuesday news of Ms Summer’s death had come as a shock.

“I spent three hours with her on Saturday night and she appeared to be on the mend. I’m heartbroken,” he said.

Aside from her political tilt, Ms Summers was also well known by her black BMW fitted with the number plates “STORMY”.
