‘Planned murder’: New evidence found in Bali shooting probe

Indonesian police have alleged the murder of Australian man Zivan Radmanovic in Bali was premeditated and that a second gun was found in a drain using a metal detector.

Indonesian police have sent a second gun off for forensic testing to see if it matches bullets and casings found at the scene of the alleged gangland murder of an Australian in Bali.

Suspected gunmen Darcy Francesco Jenson, 27, Mevlut Coskun, 23, and Paea-I Middlemore Tupou, 26, allegedly stormed a rented villa in Badung late at night on June 14, opening fire on Zivan Radmanovic, 32, his wife Jazmyn Gourdeas and her sister Daniella Gourdeas and partner Sanar Ghanim, 34.

Jenson was arrested in Jakarta while trying to leave Indonesia. Coskun and Middlemore made it through transit in Singapore and then to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where they were denied entry into the country.

All three men were shackled in prison jumpsuits last month and paraded before the public, as is customary in Indonesia.

On Monday, local police alleged at a press conference that the murder was premeditated and a second gun was found in a drain using a metal detector – 15 days after the shooting.

Standing outside Badung Police Station, Senior Commissioner Ariasandy alleged: “This was a planned murder committed by three individuals, based on the evidence and witness testimonies we have examined and verified.

“We found a 9mm caliber pistol, discovered by investigators in irrigation stream, not far from the crime scene where the victim’s vehicle had been found.”

He said the second gun has been sent to forensics to determine whether the bullets and 19 shell casings at the scene match the weapon.

Following the alleged shooting, police found bullet residue, gloves and balaclavas inside a white van allegedly used by the gunmen – the same residue was allegedly found on the bodies of two of the suspects in custody.

Commander Ariasandy alleged: “Based on forensic laboratory results, we have confirmed that the balaclava and gloves recovered from the crime scene, believed to belong to one of the perpetrators, contained DNA that matches one of the suspects currently in custody.”

“The DNA found on the balaclava and gloves is identical to that of one of the suspect,” he alleged.

Police have not yet determined where the guns came from, or the motive for the alleged shooting.

“At this point, as we are still conducting intensive investigations, we have examined 25 witnesses,” he said.

Commander Ariasandy also said Ghanim had surgery but Bali police did not have information about his welfare.

Asked if the alleged gunmen were “contract killers or hit men”, Commander Ariasandy said investigators so far have only focused on the timeline of the alleged attack and their actions prior to the incident.

Bali police plan to perform a re-enactment of the alleged attack to determine how it played out.

Radmanovic and his wife Jazmyn arrived in Bali on June 12 and had planned to stay for five days for her 30th birthday, along with Ghanim and her sister Daniella.

Two days later, the group was ambushed in the middle of the night by men wearing helmets.

Ghanim protected himself by tucking his head down and called for help with a gunshot wound in the leg. Meanwhile, Jazmyn – a mother of six – crept out of bed to check her husband’s pulse, but Radmanovic was dead.

According to a statement Daniella gave to Bali police, she was asleep when she heard an “explosion” from inside the villa.

She fled as the gunman entered her room wearing a mask, helmet and a green jacket. She ran past two scooters parked outside the villa and heard gunshots.

She told police gunshots were fired outside her room and a window was shattered just past midnight.

Jenson, Coskun and Middlemore have not yet been charged.
